About the Society
About the Register of Practical Philosophers
Who can join the Society?
Membership is open to all. We welcome as members, not only
philosophers or students in philosophy, but also professionals from
related disciplines (e.g., psychologists, psychotherapists,
counsellors, management consultants, trainers, educational
psychologists, teachers) and all others interested in the application
of philosophy to everyday life.

What are the benefits of joining?

Does joining the society mean I can join the register of
practitioners?
No. To be included on the register you need to satisfy further
criteria.
What do I need to do to get on the register?
To be registered as a philosophical counsellor you need:
a) a philosophy degree (e.g. a first degree with 50% or more of philosophy
or an M.A. exclusively in Philosophy).
b) satisfactory completion of both the practical and theoretical
elements of a level one course in philosophical counselling (these
are periodically organised by the SPP)
c) attendance to minimum 20 hours counselling skills course
d) minimum of 10 hours experience of being counselled , 5 of which should
be with a philosophical counsellor
e) supervisor's assessment, based on at least 10 supervised sessions
of philosophical counselling, that the philosophical counsellor is of a
sufficient standard to be on the register (supervisors should be SPP
accredited or overseas equivalent)
f) professional liability insurance (contact SPP for recommended policy)
g) agreement to abide by SPP Code of Practice
h) supervision
i) membership of the Society for Philosophy in Practice
How often are courses run and how much do they cost?
Courses in philosophical counselling are run by the Society once
or twice a year. They cost around £300.

Society looking for a philosophical counsellor
If you wish your details can also be put on the Society website.
Being on the register shows that you are accredited by the
Society for Philosophy in Practice
